How a house is built

Two floors stacked

Each story is a deck. The next walls stand on that deck. This house is drawn as two platforms.

Arrow keys turn the house. Plus and minus, or the zoom buttons, change the zoom. A horizontal drag turns it after you tap the drawing. Reset view returns to the step camera.

Teaching sketch of this house. Not a structural design.

The drawing needs WebGL. The notes on the page still stand.

Platform framing: each floor is a deck, and the next walls stand on it. Teaching sketch, not a detail drawing.

In platform framing the crew builds a floor deck, stands walls on it, then builds the next deck on those walls. Stories stay the height of the studs. Balloon framing, the older pattern, runs studs past the floor and hangs the joists on a ledger. It needs fireblocking at the floors so a cavity cannot act as a flue.

This house shows a main floor and an upper floor with a stair opening. That stacking is platform framing. The joist direction, the hangers, and the nailing are not in the model.
